Stop Press - Get Involved in Fashion for Diversity!
With Body Confidence Week falling on Oct 13th, The Body Confidence Awards from Parliament and the Be Real Campaign benefiting from contributions and insight from Founding Ambassadors All Walks Beyond the Catwalk who sit as advisory members of the APPG on Body Image, we ask you to join us this academic year for the launch of our latest Diversity NOW! 2014/2015 initiative in association with i-D and supported by Arts Thread, by showing us your unique vision of Fashion for Diversity.
Our Goal…
Fashion Creatives have the Power to…Challenge existing fashion industry dependance on limited body and beauty ideals, and celebrate diverse representations of race, age, size and physical appearance. All you have to do is use your creative gifts to add an image to the ever growing stable of diverse beauty here on the All Walks site.
“Fashion is boring when everybody looks the same.” co founder Debra Bourne.
“Fashion has the power to embolden the wearer and the viewer.” co founder Caryn Franklin
Take your time to look around the site and discover why we feel so passionately about broadening body and beauty ideals, then add your creativity to the growing call for ‘inclusive,’ fashion practice. Envision a world that empowers you and the next generation of fashion lovers. WHY? Because the consumer is diverse and the global market place is diverse.
Deliver your vision of Diversity NOW!
“A lot of our students commented that doing this All Walks cluster of projects was like having therapy! We will definitely embed Diversity NOW! every year as it really opened our eyes to what our students were thinking.”
Sarah Lewington Nottingham Trent University
Colleges should engage with this project – it’s such a brilliant way for students to think about their market. It’s all about learning empathy and it’s the thinking and creative process that really counts.
Mal Burkinshaw, Director Diversity Network
ARTS THREAD is proud to be a partner with the annual Diversity NOW! competition created by All Walks Beyond the Catwalk. It is important that the upcoming generation of creatives are given a platform to question the prevailing stereotypes and to suggest their own interpretations of what constitutes beauty and style.

Tutors and students reported amazing benefits ranging from students gaining empathy with the women they will design for and new knowledge of what consumers feel when they engage with fashion and fashion imagery, to tutors themselves feeling the project helped them understand what students were thinking, giving them a valuable language to engage in a different way.
Thank you to Senior Lecturer Sarah Lewington from Nottingham-Trent who has kindly written up her college’s brief as an example of the way she approached Diversity NOW! for maximum gain which is included in the brief you will download.
